Planning a Napa Valley getaway for the first time can be challenging, but don't worry, we've got you covered. Here are four simple tips to help you plan the best possible vacation in wine country. Over the years, Napa Valley has transformed from farm country to a top-rated vacation destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. While wine is the main attraction, the valley offers so much more, including amazing restaurants, spas, luxurious hotels, and an emerging downtown scene. To make the most of your Napa Valley experience, you'll need a plan, and we're here to help!

Tip 1: Location, Location, Location!

When choosing your accommodation, location is key. Consider what you want to see and do and choose a hotel or Airbnb in the right area. Prices can vary significantly depending on the type of accommodation you prefer. Some popular areas in Napa Valley include Downtown Napa, Yountville, Calistoga, St Helena, and Rutherford. If you value privacy, you'll find it in Calistoga. If you prefer to be within walking distance of everything, consider staying in Downtown Napa. Book well in advance to secure the best rates possible, especially during weekends from March to October. Here are a few popular resorts and hotels in each area:

Downtown Napa:
  • Archer Hotel Napa

  • Andaz Napa

  • The Westin Verasa Napa

Yountville:
  • The Estate Yountville

  • North Block Hotel

  • Bardessono Hotel and Spa

St Helena:
  • Harvest Inn by Charlie Palmer

  • Las Alcobas Napa Valley

  • Meadowood Napa Valley

Calistoga:
  • Solage, an Auberge Resort

  • Indian Springs Calistoga

  • Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs

Rutherford:
  • Auberge du Soleil

  • Rancho Caymus Inn

  • Poetry Inn

Tip 2: Reserve Everything in Advance

If you plan to visit any of the 400+ wineries and 90 tasting rooms in Napa Valley, it's crucial to secure your winery and tasting room reservations in advance. The most popular wineries tend to get booked the most by visitors, especially during peak or prime times, which are usually between 11am and 3pm. Covid-19 policies have also changed the way wineries operate, making reservations almost mandatory. Book the earliest or latest tasting of the day to increase your chances of securing a reservation. You can book winery reservations online through most winery websites, or you can use one-stop-shop reservation sites like exploretock.com or cellarpass.com.

Tip 3: Make Dinner and Breakfast Reservations

When it comes to dining, make sure you make dinner AND breakfast reservations for each day before you arrive. Breakfast reservations can be just as important as dinner reservations. Nothing is more frustrating than being excited to eat first thing in the morning, only to find out you have to wait two hours to do so. Make sure you do your research in advance and make reservations ASAP. OpenTable.com, Yelp.com, or Resy.com are great resources for making breakfast and dinner reservations.

Tip 4: Explore Beyond Wine Tasting

While Napa Valley is known for its wine, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Consider exploring the valley's natural beauty by hiking or biking the many trails, or indulge in a spa treatment. You can also take a hot air balloon ride, visit an art gallery or museum, or attend a concert or festival.

By following these tips, you're sure to have an unforgettable vacation in Napa Valley. Enjoy the wine, the food, the scenery, and all the other amazing experiences the valley has to offer!
