From SFO to London Town: Why Virgin Atlantic Premium is the Sweet Spot for Families

Updated: Dec 1

As a family of four who travels a lot, finding the right balance between comfort and cost on a long-haul flight can feel like chasing a unicorn. But let me tell you, fellow resort chasers, our recent experience flying Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy from San Francisco (SFO) to London Heathrow (LHR) was nothing short of a dream.

It wasn't just a great flight; it was a revelation on how travel with kids should be, proving that the middle ground between standard economy and splurge-worthy Upper Class is exactly where the magic happens.

The Deal of the Century: Scoring the Tickets

Let's start with the best part: the price. Last year, we managed to snag an incredible deal during one of Virgin's online sales. The tickets—four in total for two adults and our two enthusiastic kids—came in at a shockingly low 16,500 points a piece!

Finding a transatlantic flight in a premium cabin for that price is unheard of, and it immediately set the tone for a trip where we felt like we were winning before we even left the house. This is the kind of travel hacker score that makes you a believer in watching those loyalty program sales like a hawk.

Priority Perks: Skipping the Airport Stress

One of the biggest wins when traveling with little ones (or even big ones!) is streamlining the airport process. The Premium Economy experience starts on the ground. We zipped through the dedicated Premium Check-in and baggage drop-off, which saved us what would have been a soul-crushing queue in the main economy line.

Then came priority boarding. Instead of fighting the scrum, we were among the first to step on board. This was a huge benefit, allowing us to get the kids settled, stow our carry-ons in the generous overhead bins, and just breathe before the plane filled up. The whole process felt genuinely premium and stress-free.

The Comfort Factor: Space to Stretch Out

Now, onto the actual seat. The flight from SFO to LHR is a solid 10+ hours, and the extra space in Premium Economy makes all the difference, especially when your family includes a very tall traveler.

My husband, at 6'5", has spent many long-haul flights performing the cramped-knee dance, but the difference here was night and day.

* The Seat: The seats are notably wider and upholstered in comfortable black leather (at least on our aircraft!), giving them a more substantial and luxurious feel than standard economy.

* The Pitch and Recline: With a seat pitch of up to 38 inches and a significantly better recline (up to 7-8 inches), he finally had room to stretch out. The deep pitch meant his knees weren't jammed into the seat-back pocket for ten hours. The kids were also able to snooze comfortably without their heads lolling onto the tray table. While it's not a lie-flat bed, the deep recline and adjustable footrest (on many aircraft) allowed for some decent sleep, which is the holy grail of overnight flights. You truly feel like you are in a separate, quiet cabin.

Elevated Service & Dining: More Than Just 'Plane Food'

Virgin Atlantic truly steps up its game in the Premium cabin when it comes to service and food.

We were welcomed on board with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine (or juice for the non-bubbly-drinkers), a nice touch that signals the start of a relaxed journey.

The dining service was a distinct upgrade from what you find further back. Meals are served on proper china with real cutlery, which, let's be honest, elevates the whole experience instantly. You get a choice of three main courses from a premium menu, and the quality of the food was genuinely good—think restaurant-inspired dishes, not microwaved mystery meat.

Throughout the flight, the attentiveness of the cabin crew was consistently excellent. Plus, a brilliant feature on many of their aircraft is the Wander Wall or a self-serve snack area, which is perfect for when the kids get the inevitable mid-flight munchies. Being able to grab a little extra snack or drink whenever we wanted, rather than having to wait for a trolley, was a definite parent-win.

The Verdict: Absolutely Worth It

Virgin Atlantic's Premium Economy on the SFO-LHR route hits a perfect sweet spot. It provides a level of comfort, service, and convenience that is miles above economy but without the steep price tag of Upper Class (especially when you can snag a points deal like ours!).

The extra legroom—a non-negotiable for anyone over six feet!—the dedicated cabin feel, the priority treatment at the airport, and the upgraded dining all combine to transform a long overnight haul into a genuinely pleasant part of the vacation. If you're looking for a way to arrive in London feeling refreshed and ready to hit the ground running, look no further than Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy.
