Roman Holiday Redefined: A Cozy December Retreat at The Tribune Hotel in Rome, Italy

Updated: Jan 7

Finding the perfect home base for a family of four in Rome—especially with kids aged 9 and 6—can feel a bit like a marathon. You want the history of the Eternal City at your doorstep, but you also need a place that doesn't feel too "stiff" for a tired five-year-old. On our recent six-night getaway this past December, The Tribune Hotel (part of Hyatt’s JdV Collection) in Rome turned out to be exactly the kind of sanctuary we were looking for.

Making the Most of the Hyatt Points "Sweet Spot"

Since we’re always looking for ways to maximize travel, we booked this stay using World of Hyatt points. We checked into a King Junior Suite, which was a total game-changer for our family of four. The room featured a massive king bed for us and a comfortable trundle bed that the kids actually enjoyed sharing. Plus, having a private balcony in December was a treat; there’s something special about stepping outside with a coffee to watch the Roman sunrise before the city starts its morning rush.

The points math worked out beautifully, too. We stayed for 5 nights, totaling 151,000 Hyatt points. The rates shifted slightly during our stay—32,000 points per night for two nights and 29,000 per night for three—which felt like a steal given the size and quality of the suite.

The Globalist "Guest of Honor" Perk

The real highlight of our mornings was thanks to a Hyatt Globalist Guest of Honor pass. If you can snag one of these, do it. It granted us a daily free breakfast buffet that quickly became our favorite daily ritual.

In a city where "breakfast" is usually just a quick espresso and a pastry taken standing up at a bar, this spread was a massive upgrade. We’re talking a full American-style buffet in a bright, modern dining room. The kids were obsessed with the pancakes and the selection of Italian cakes, while we gravitated toward the fresh eggs, crispy bacon, and local cheeses. It wasn’t just about the food; it was the peace of mind knowing the kids were fully fueled before we hit the cobblestones for a day of exploring.

Location: The Best of Both Worlds

The Tribune is tucked away in the upscale Ludovisi neighborhood at Via Campania, 45, 00187 Rome, right across from the Villa Borghese gardens. For a family, this location is pure gold. Whenever the kids had a case of the "wiggles," we were just a five-minute walk from the park’s wide-open spaces and playgrounds.

Even though the street feels quiet and residential, you aren't far from the action. We found ourselves just a 15-to-20-minute stroll from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. It was the perfect setup: close enough to walk to the icons, but far enough away to escape the heavy tourist crowds at the end of the day.

The Little Things That Matter

It’s often the smallest details that make a trip "sticky" for kids. For ours, it was the candies in the lobby. Every time we walked through the front door, they made a beeline for those jars. It became their little reward for a long day of sightseeing, and the staff couldn't have been sweeter about it.

When we weren't out exploring, we took advantage of the hotel's amenities:

* The Basement Gym: Surprisingly well-equipped for a boutique hotel. It’s clean, modern, and great for a quick reset.

* Terrazza Borghese: This rooftop restaurant is the hotel’s crown jewel. Even in the December chill, the views over the park and the Roman skyline are breathtaking. We spent a couple of evenings here with drinks, watching the city lights flicker on—a core memory for all of us.

A Quick Note on the Elevator

If I had to find one "hiccup," it’s that the hotel only has one elevator. In a busy boutique spot, you might expect a bit of a wait. Honestly, though? It was a non-issue for us. The staff was so incredibly proactive—every time they saw us coming with bags or gear for the kids, they were right there to help us get everything up to the room. That kind of service really makes the one-elevator situation feel like a minor detail.

Final Thoughts

The Tribune Hotel managed to pull off that rare feat: feeling chic and "grown-up" while being genuinely welcoming to a family with young kids. Between the points-friendly suite, the incredible breakfast, and the constant supply of lobby sweets, it made our Roman holiday feel effortless. If you’re heading to Rome in the winter, this is a spot that truly understands how to take care of you.
