Credit Card Review: Striking Gold - Why We Pulled the Trigger on the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s 150,000-Point Bonus

Chase Sapphire Reserve
Chase Sapphire Reserve

Here at Resort Chasers, we live for the thrill of the luxury hotel redemption. We obsess over point ratios, maximize property credits, and carefully plot our credit card strategy to unlock five-star family getaways for a fraction of the retail cost.

The premium credit card market has been a battlefield of shifting annual fees and reimagined benefits. But Chase laid down a massive marker last June: a blockbuster 150,000-point welcome offer for the Chase Sapphire Reserve® after spending $6,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

While the card commands a steep $795 annual fee, this monstrous sign-up bonus—paired with an incredibly robust lineup of hotel credits, airport lounge access, and unrivaled transfer rules—made hitting the "Apply Now" button an absolute no-brainer for our travel portfolio. Here is our comprehensive guide to all the card benefits, credits, and perks, and exactly why this card has taken center stage for our future family travel adventures.

The Catalyst: Why the 100,000-Point Bonus Changes Everything

A $795 annual fee requires serious justification. However, a 150,000-point Ultimate Rewards bonus completely rewrites that math right out of the gate.

When you hold the Sapphire Reserve, your points enjoy a 50% Points Boost when redeemed directly through the Chase Travel℠ portal. That means the sign-up bonus alone is worth a guaranteed $2,250 toward flights, car rentals, or luxury resort bookings.

But as true resort chasers, we rarely look at portal redemptions. The real magic lies in Chase's 1:1 strategic transfer partners. Crucially, recent shifts in the credit card landscape have made the Sapphire Reserve even more critical. While other cards in the Sapphire family saw their transfer ratios drop for key partners, the Sapphire Reserve strictly maintains its 1:1 transfer ratio to World of Hyatt.

Because Hyatt award charts routinely offer outsized value—often letting you book a $1,000-a-night premium property for just 30,000 to 45,000 points—those 150,000 points can easily be parlayed into $3,000 to $5,000 in actual resort value. For our family, that is multiple free nights at top-tier properties without touching our vacation budget.

The Credit Stack: How to Wipe Out the $795 Annual Fee

If you leverage the credits properly, the effective cost of holding this card drops down to zero. Chase has aggressively expanded its statement credit ecosystem, offering staggering value across travel, lodging, dining, and lifestyle categories.

1. The Unrestricted $300 Annual Travel Credit

This remains the gold standard of travel credits. Unlike competitors that force you to jump through hoops—like choosing a single airline or booking exclusively through a proprietary portal—Chase’s $300 annual travel credit is completely unrestricted and resets each account anniversary year. It applies automatically to the first $300 you spend on flights, boutique hotels, campgrounds, trains, cruises, parking garages, or even daily subway commutes. It is as good as cash.

2. The $750 Premium Hotel Credit Ecosystem

For luxury resort enthusiasts, Chase went all-in by introducing a multi-tiered hotel credit system that can radically lower the cost of a weekend escape:

  • The Edit by Chase Travel Credits ($500 annually): Cardmembers receive up to $500 in automatic statement credits each calendar year, broken into two $250 credits for separate, prepaid stays of two nights or more at properties within The Edit collection. Even better, bookings through The Edit automatically trigger elite-style perks: complimentary daily breakfast for two, room upgrades (based on availability), early check-in/late checkout, and a $100 on-property credit to use at the spa or resort restaurants.

  • Select Chase Travel Hotels Credit ($250 one-time perk): Valid for prepaid bookings of two nights or more, this credit provides an additional $250 back on eligible stays at highly rated global brands, including IHG Hotels & Resorts, Omni, Montage, Pendry, Virgin Hotels, Minor Hotels, and Pan Pacific.

Resort Chasers Pro-Tip: These hotel credits can be stacked on consecutive or strategic bookings. If you book a qualifying two-night stay at a luxury property like a Pendry or a participating IHG resort through Chase Travel, you can deploy these credits to cover up to $500 of your room cost in one go, while still pocketing the $100 on-property amenity credit.

3. Entertainment & Lifestyle Credits

Beyond travel, the Sapphire Reserve packs in premium daily-use credits that are incredibly easy to maximize:

  • $300 Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables Dining Credit: Issued as two $150 credits every six months (January–June and July–December), this credit applies automatically when you dine at participating highly acclaimed restaurants booked via OpenTable. By securing the card in June, we timed it perfectly to maximize the first semi-annual dining credit. We used it for a fantastic dinner at Burdell Soul Food, a Michelin-rated gem in Oakland we’d been dying to try—and the credit covered nearly the entire bill.

  • $300 StubHub / viagogo Credit: Split into $150 biannual increments, perfect for knocking down the cost of concert tickets, theater, or major sporting events. We were also able to take advantage of the first semi-annual entertainment credit in June by purchasing 4 tickets via Stubhub for a Golden State Valkyries WNBA game at the Chase Center in San Francisco, CA. Once again, the credit covered nearly the entire purchase.

  • $300 DoorDash Credits & DashPass: Enjoy a complimentary DashPass membership alongside monthly promos consisting of two $10 non-restaurant promos (for convenience or grocery items) and one $5 restaurant promo.

  • $120 Lyft Credits: Received as $10 in automatic monthly in-app ride credits. This is an easy credit for our family to take advantage of as we regularly use Lyft more than once a month for various reasons throughout the Bay Area and on our travels.

  • $288 Digital Entertainment Value: Complimentary, fully covered subscriptions to both Apple TV+ and Apple Music, saving you out-of-pocket streaming costs completely. My wife was probably most excited about this credit because Apple TV is her first choice for home entertainment and Apple Music was already her favorite music app. This credit is an instant savings off the annual fee because it just paid for something we already enjoyed anyway.

Ultimate Earning Multipliers

When it comes to putting spend on the card, the Sapphire Reserve functions as a high-octane point accelerator.

  • 8x Points on Chase Travel Purchases (Flights, Hotels, Car Rentals, and The Edit properties)

  • 5x Points on Partner Rideshare Services

  • 4x Points on Flights & Hotels Booked Directly with the Airline or Property

  • 3x Points on Dining & Restaurants Worldwide

  • 1x Point on All Other Everyday Purchases

Earning 4x points on direct hotel bookings means that even when we choose not to use the Chase portal—perhaps to utilize a corporate rate or tap into our existing hotel elite status—we are still racking up an exceptional return on every dollar spent.

Ground Perks: Lounges and Elite Status

A true luxury vacation begins long before you check into your resort. The airport experience dictates the tone of the trip, and the Sapphire Reserve handles the airport chaos seamlessly.

The Upgraded Lounge Network

Cardmembers receive a Priority Pass Select membership, granting entry to over 1,300 airport lounges worldwide for the primary cardmember and up to two guests.

More importantly, cardholders get unlimited, complimentary access to the rapidly growing, highly praised network of Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club (alongside two guests). This cardmpaired with our Ritz Carlton Credit Card gets our family of four into Chase lounges FREE each time. These lounges have completely elevated domestic airport dining, featuring curated dynamic menus, private rest pods, local craft beer on tap, and high-end wellness rooms.

Elite Hotel & Rental Perks

To round out the VIP treatment, the card provides an automatic up-to-$120 credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS every four years to breeze through airport security lines. Once on the ground, cardmembers enjoy complimentary IHG One Rewards Platinum Elite status, unlocking free room upgrades and late checkouts. This is a huge win for us because we already have Platinum status with Marriott Bonvoy through the Brilliant Card and we maintain Explorist Status every year through Hyatt, so we have our top Hotels brands covered effectively. We also gain top-tier elite status with primary rental agencies, including National Car Rental Emerald Club Executive status, Avis Preferred Plus, and specialized elite privileges with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards.

Vault-Class Travel Protections

At ResortChasers, we always emphasize that the best travel insurance is the one you don't have to buy separately. The Chase Sapphire Reserve offers what is widely regarded as the most bulletproof, comprehensive travel protection suite of any credit card on the market:

  • Primary Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): Provides up to $75,000 for theft and collision damage. Because it is primary coverage, you can entirely decline the rental company's expensive insurance, and you do not have to involve your personal auto insurance policy if something goes wrong.

  • Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance: Reimburses up to $10,000 per covered traveler ($20,000 per trip) for non-refundable travel expenses if your trip is cut short or canceled due to sickness, severe weather, or structural disruptions.

  • Trip Delay Reimbursement: If your flight or common carrier is delayed by more than 6 hours or requires an overnight stay, you are covered up to $500 per ticket for unreimbursed expenses like hotel rooms, meals, and toiletries.

  • Emergency Evacuation & Transportation: Provides up to $100,000 in coverage for medical services and emergency transportation if you or an immediate family member becomes sick or injured on a trip 100 miles or more away from home.

Final Check-In: The Verdict

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is no longer just a slick piece of dark metal to throw down at dinner; it is an absolute powerhouse for intentional travelers. By capitalizing on this massive 150,000-point welcome offer, we effectively locked in thousands of dollars in future resort stays. When you add up the $300 travel credit, the $750 hotel ecosystem, the $300 dining credit, and the elite lounge perks, the card doesn't just pay for itself—it consistently hands us a profit.

If your goal is to travel deeper, sleep softer, and maximize every single point along the way, keeping this card anchored in your wallet is the ultimate play. Ready to map out your next points-fueled escape? Let us know in the comments which resort you are chasing next!
